Unsafe Chemical Levels in Some Irish Drinking Water Supplies

The European Commission could implement potential infringement proceedings on the Irish Government due to the unsafe levels of THM’s found in some drinking water supplies in certain parts of Ireland according to a report in the Irish Times. THMs (Trihalomethanes) are chemicals that are found in many public water supplies which have been treated with Chlorine. THM’s are formed when chlorine is added to purify water, when the water includes some organic materials. Long-term exposure to these chemicals could increase the risks of cancers, including bladder and colon cancer, and also causes damage to the heart, lungs, liver, kidney and central nervous system.
